New Years Resolutions for Success in 2020

2020 spelled out in balloons

Can you believe it? 2020 is almost here! A new year, a new decade, and a new chance to make yourself the best that you can be. New Years is a great time for you to create new goals, instill new habits, and learn new skills. Everybody makes resolutions, but how often do you really keep them? You stop going to the gym once February hits, and you’re back to eating junk food the second you pass a McDonalds. So what would happen if you made resolutions based on the success that you desire, instead of making (and utterly failing) the same basic resolutions every year. I’ve come up with some of the best resolutions that I could think of, to help you start the new year off right, and to help you be more successful in 2020.

Start Reading

Reading a book while holding coffee

When was the last time that you read a book? Chances are that for a lot of us, reading is not our strong suit. Some of you are probably sitting there, and realizing that the last book you read cover to cover was a required reading book for high school. I firmly believe that reading is one of the most important factors to your success, because you gain new knowledge, see the world from a different angle, and you can learn from some of the most successful people in the world, and in the field that you are in. So if you only do one thing in 2020, go to the store, grab some books, and start reading!

Get Up Earlier

Most successful people will tell you that their day starts before the sun is up. You realize that we spend 1/3rd of our day sleeping? Get up earlier, when the world is quiet and it’s easier to focus, and get to work. You will notice that with the extra couple hours in your day, you will get more done than ever. And if you don’t want to wake up early, then you better start finding ways to make money while you sleep.

Boost Your Income

Obviously we all want to earn more money, but how many of us are actually going out and putting in the effort? I know that life isn’t all about money, but try having any fun if you’re broke. This is the year for you to grow your income. Whether that means getting a higher paying job, asking for a raise, or getting a side hustle, you need to make an active effort to make more money each month.

Boost Your Savings

Briefcase full of money

According to, 69% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings. That is ridiculous! This year I want you to get into that 31%, and really work on saving more money. If an emergency were to come up, would you be able to handle it without going into debt? Building your savings is the safety net that protects you when something happens. Not to mention, if you don’t start saving now, how do you ever expect to retire?

Kick Your Bad Money Habits

Dice and poker chips

We all have bad money habits that harm us financially. I’m talking about things like buying Starbucks every morning instead of making coffee at home, gambling on scratch-offs and lottery tickets, or eating out for all of your meals instead of making food at home. You can still enjoy the same things, but look at those habits and see how you can cut down on costs. Cut your bad habits and start working on building good habits!

Figure Out Why You Want to Be Successful

Without goals you’re wandering without a map and hoping you find your destination. I truly believe that you need to set goals so that you really know what you want to achieve. Anybody can say “I want to be successful”, but what you need to ask yourself is what success looks like to you. Set goals that you truly think that you can achieve. It could be something like “I want to save $5,000 this year”, or “I want to pay off my credit cards”. Find financial goals that will put you in a better position, and set you up for the future.

Learn How to Budget

Knowing how to budget should already be a habit, and they should teach it in school. Unfortunately not many people actually budget their money, and most schools don’t teach it. So this year, learn how to budget, and you will have a much better idea of how your income and your expenses flow with each other each month.

Network With Like-Minded People

I promise that you are not the only person in the world that wants to be financially free. Start networking and befriending people who share the same goals and dreams as you. Not only will you learn new things from them, but they could very well become the support that you need to realize that your goals are possible. You develop habits from people that you are constantly with, so find people that have good habits.

Stop Making Excuses

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” -Jordan Belfort

We are all guilty of this, and I am no exception. When life gets hard or our dreams seem like they are out of reach, we make excuses as to why it’s not working. What we fail to realize is that the time we spend making excuses and feeling sorry for ourselves, could be better spent figuring out what isn’t working and what to do next. So if you want to have a more successful year, stop making excuses and start taking action.

Value Yourself

There is only one you in this world, and you deserve more than the credit that you give yourself. How is anyone ever going to respect you if you can’t even respect yourself? Your mentality and attitude directly affects every aspect of your life. So instead of worrying about your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. Maybe you are an amazing writer, or you make friends easily, or people love your food. Value your abilities and strengths, and hopefully you can find a way to leverage these financially as well!

Stick With It

“Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all of the facts.”

This is the year people. This is the year where we stick with our resolutions all the way until next New Years, and then build from there. I know that it is hard to change your habits, or make time for reading, etc., but make an effort to stick with it. There isn’t anything on this list that you can not learn or accomplish with a little bit of effort and determination. So make this year the best year yet!

Thanks for Reading!
